Training Overview

This video session will provide an introduction to comics and graphic novels for educators, focusing specifically on how they can be used to encourage reading for pleasure.

What Does It Cover?

We will:

  • Define and explore terms relating to comics, graphic novels and manga
  • Explore ‘’comics basics” including considering how we read comics
  • Explore the wide variety of comics available for children/teenagers
  • Discuss benefits for using comics to encourage reading for pleasure
  • Provide signposting to further information, resources and support relating to comics

Who Should Watch This Video Training?

The training will be suitable for any teachers, librarians or support staff interested in finding out more about comics and graphic novels and how they can be used to encourage reading for pleasure.

Who Will Be Leading the Training?

Jenny Holder is the Reading Coordinator at Liverpool Learning Partnership, a charitable organisation that supports the work of over 160 schools.  Prior to this, Jenny worked as a primary school teacher (including time as an English Coordinator) for 13 years.  During her time at LLP, Jenny has worked to establish reading clubs for vulnerable pupils in 100 schools and has established the city-wide Liverpool Readathon and Liverpool Children’s Festival of Reading.  In 2021 she won the Community Reading Champion award in the Farshore Reading for Pleasure Teaching Awards. Jenny reads widely and diversely and has a strong knowledge of comics and graphic novels available for children and teenagers.

Cost

This training is free for LLP member schools. There is a £50 cost for non-LLP schools payable via invoice. Non-LLP MATs/networks contact us for a discount rate per school.
