Stories and books are a great way to encourage children to think about a range of mathematical concepts. For the past 3 years, Liverpool Learning Partnership has provided LLP member settings with story sacks featuring books that focus on mathematical concepts.
This year, our maths story sack has been made available to 50 EYFS settings and schools. The featured text is One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller by Kate Read. This picture book tells the story of a cunning fox attempting to steal some eggs through its stunning illustrations whilst the text encourages young readers to count the different elements on the page. The story sack contains a copy of the book plus a range of items to encourage counting, pattern and shape work and imaginative play. Schools will also have access to a range of online and printable materials to support use in school and to encourage parents/carers to continue the learning around this book at home.
We have also worked with Virtual School Liverpool to provide versions of the One Fox story sack to looked after pupils of Reception age. These sacks include art and craft supplies plus ideas for carers on how to use the items at home.
