Representations is Liverpool Learning Partnership’s response to national campaigns relating to diversity and inclusion in children’s literature. It is a series of events, resources and training designed to support schools with engaging pupils in conversations surrounding issues of diversity and inclusion in children’s literature.

The first Representations event was inspired by the CLPE’s Reflecting Realities report and was held on 11th July 2019 at Springwood Heath Primary School and brought together 50 pupils between the ages of 8 and 13 from 16 different schools to discuss their feelings surrounding representation in children’s literature. The event included child speakers, discussion points and opportunities to explore a wide range of books.

Following this we have developed a range of Representations resources and training events to further explore the issues raised at this mini-conference. This includes a regularly updated CPD padlet for teachers looking to ensure that their reading offer is diverse and inclusive. In the Autumn/Spring terms of 2022-23 we ran training sessions for both primary and secondary teachers on diversity and inclusion in children’s literature.
