Y6 to Y7 transition

This year’s transition day will be Wednesday 3rd July.

We will, as usual, be working with Angel Solutions to compile, distribute, collate the year 6 information for secondary schools. Heads are asked to look at the current headings on the transition form and make comments to Elaine by February 7th about any omissions or additions they feel to be necessary. This can then be agreed with the managerial associations before being sent to Angel Solutions to action.

Reading Festival

Thank you to all schools who have attended sessions for the Liverpool Children’s Festival of Reading. At the time of writing we’ve held three author events which have reached approx. 8500 pupils. You can still book onto events that are still to come: Reading Festival

Don’t forget that we have a 12 minute pre-recorded session for EYFS with Ray Lowthian that you can share in class. We’ve also had permission from Ray and Comics Youth to say that EYFS classes may want to share the link with parents/carers. Subject: Help raise dementia awareness – a unique opportunity for Liverpool

In March, Liverpool will host the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference, drawing in dementia researchers from around the world.

It’s estimated that one in two children across the city has a connection to someone affected by dementia, whether through a friend or family member caring for someone, or a grandparent living with the disease. But fear and misconceptions about the condition remain.

During the conference week (18-22 March), the charity aims to raise awareness of dementia and the importance of brain health for everyone in Liverpool, including children and young people. To do this, they have developed a lesson/assembly presentation tailored for both primary and secondary teachers.

The presentations cover a range of topics, including a basic overview of dementia, it’s impact on individuals, how to improve brain health, and current research. It’s a great way for teachers to introduce this sensitive topic to pupils who may be directly affected by the illness within their families.

We feel this is a fantastic opportunity for schools to educate young people about brain health and make a positive contribution to the long-term brain health of the city.

If this is of interest to you and your school, please contact their regional co-ordinator, Simon McDermott, at simon.mcdermott@alzheimersresearchuk.org for more information.

The charity is also putting on a weekend of free hands-on activities about dementia research for families at the Museum of Liverpool on 16 & 17 March. Find out more at www.alzheimersresearchuk.org/research/public-events
