Training Overview
This session will help delegates to support expectant mothers and families to ‘read to their bump’. It provides an overview of the science behind learning in utero and for babies as well as the benefits for families of starting reading to their child as early as possible.
Please note that this is an overview session that provides a shorter version of our two popular training sessions: Read To Bump and Books with Babies.
This training is available to those working with families in Merseyside authorities. It is funded by Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership.
What Does It Cover?
- The current research regarding brain development and the capacity for learning in utero and young babies
- The current research regarding early communication and reading
- The benefits of creating a culture of reading in the home
- Ways to support parents (including those for whom English is an Additional Language or those with low levels of literacy) with sharing books and reading aloud
Who Should Attend?
The training will be suitable for those who work directly with expectant mothers and parents. This could be those who work in Children’s Centres, Midwives, Health Visitors, Family Support, librarians and those from voluntary and community groups. The training is relevant to both those who work with parents on a 1:1 basis in their home and those working with ante-natal groups.
Who Will Be Leading the Training?
Jenny Holder, Reading Coordinator and Communications Manager at Liverpool Learning Partnership.
Jenny is an experienced literacy leader who has worked both as a primary school teacher and in the charity sector, supporting schools and families with developing reading for pleasure.
