Liverpool Readathon- Get Involved!

Reading, Raising and Being Amazing- The city unites for the Liverpool Readathon

Boy wizards and hungry caterpillars are on the curriculum for Liverpool schools this Autumn as pupils in the city’s schools join forces for the third Liverpool Readathon, which will encourage reading for pleasure whilst also bringing the power of stories to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The Liverpool Readathon is being organised by Liverpool Learning Partnership with the national charity Read for Good, which has been running its sponsored read events in individual schools since 1984.  The past two Liverpool Readathons have raised over £32,000 to fund books and storyteller visits for children at Alder Hey.

The Liverpool Readathon 2020 will run for two weeks, from Monday 2nd – Friday 13th March.  In schools across the city, children will either be sponsored to read what they love or bring a donation whilst taking part in a citywide Drop Everything and Read event.  20% of whatever a school raises will be used to buy books for its library, 10% is going to support Liverpool Learning Partnership’s work on reading for pleasure and the remaining 70% funds Read for Good’s unique programme bringing a regular supply of books and storytellers into the UK’s major children’s hospitals, including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

As part of our mission to create a community of readers, we’re aiming to build a real buzz about books and reading for fun across Liverpool.  We’re looking for the support and participating of local organisations to get as many people across the city involved.

There are a number of ways in which you can support the Liverpool Readathon:

  • Join us by taking part in our DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) event where people (adults and children) across the city will do just that, drop everything and read, on World Book Day, Thursday 5th March.  Encourage your staff and clients to take 15 minutes to engage in the relaxing act of reading for pleasure. You may even want to create a special offer for those choosing to read in your venue!  We can provide you with printable posters to show that your workplace is taking part in the Liverpool Readathon DEAR sessions.
  • 2020 in Liverpool is set to be a city-wide Year of Reading.  Get involved by helping to share the love of reading on social media.  Share pictures of your staff and customers taking time to read and tag them with #liverpoolreadathon and #liverpoolreads
  • Run a reading related event- you may choose to celebrate the fun and relaxation that reading can bring by working with us to organise a Liverpool Readathon linked event during the fortnight of 2nd – 13th March.

Alternatively, if you have an idea of how your organisation could help support the Readathon, however big or small, it would be great to hear from you.
