Next week over 70 Liverpool schools will be taking part in the UK’s first ever mass sponsored read! Approximately 20,000 pupils will be reading both for pleasure and to raise money to fund the purchase of books and storyteller visits for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Children taking part in the event will be sponsored to read whatever they like – from comics to classics – with the emphasis on reading what they love. It’s National Libraries Week next week so it seems fitting that 20% of whatever a school raises will be returned to them in the form of Scholastic vouchers which can be used to buy books for reading areas/the school library. 10% of the money raised also go towards Liverpool Learning Partnership’s work on reading for pleasure in Liverpool schools and the other 70% goes towards Read For Good‘s work on providing books and storytellers for children in hospital.
As part of our Readathon celebration we have several different events running through the week. On 11th October we’ll be celebrating the wonder of children’s books with a visit from author and illustrator Sarah McIntyre. Sarah will start the day early by visiting Springwood Heath Primary School for a breakfast club meet and greet session with their CRASH (Cool Readers at Springwood Heath) reading club. Following this pupils from 5 different schools will be able to hear Sarah talk about her work, the importance of books and even have a go at drawing! The fun continues after lunch when Sarah will visit our competition winners St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School for an illustration-packed afternoon session with their KS2 pupils.
Friday 13th October marks our #LiverpoolReadathon Drop Everything And Read. At 1.30pm 20,000 pupils across the city will stop what they are doing, pick up their books and get stuck in to a good story (or amazing non-fiction for that matter). We’re hoping teachers and support staff will join in too to show that reading is fun for all ages!
Some schools are celebrating the #LiverpoolReadathon with extra parent/community events too or special cross-curricular reading lessons. If your school is doing something amazing for the #LiverpoolReadation and National Libraries Week, get in touch with Jenny on email@example.com! We’d love to hear about it!
